How to Ride a Snakeboard - Streetboard for Beginners

Getting started on a streetboard can feel tricky at first — but with the right approach, you'll be rolling in no time. I'm Sergi Nicolas, 16x World Champion, and here's how I'd teach a complete beginner to ride.

Step 1: Get Your Stance Right

Stand on the board with one foot on each footplate. Your feet should be roughly shoulder-width apart. Find a comfortable, relaxed stance — knees slightly bent, weight centred. Don't lock your knees or stand too rigid.

Step 2: Learn the Motion

The key to moving on a streetboard is the snake motion. Twist your shoulders one way and let your hips follow — then reverse. Think of it like a slow, controlled wiggle. The board will start to move as your body generates momentum through the footplates.

Step 3: Start on a Flat Surface

Always start on a flat, smooth surface — a car park or smooth pavement works great. Avoid hills until you're comfortable with the basic motion and can control your speed.

Step 4: Learn to Stop

To slow down, reduce the intensity of your snake motion and let the board coast to a stop. You can also drag a foot gently on the ground. Avoid stopping suddenly — ease into it.

Step 5: Build Confidence

Once you can move and stop comfortably, start experimenting with turning. Lean your weight in the direction you want to go while maintaining the snake motion. It'll feel natural quickly.
